Ton$ of Money
by Will Evans and Valentine
Adapted by Alan Ayckbourn
Unsuccessful inventor, Aubrey Allington, inherits a fortune, which reverts on his death to a cousin, George Maitland, thought to have died abroad. Aubrey has the brilliant idea of dying and resurrecting himself as his cousin, thus avoiding payment of his own enormous debts. As usual complications arise in the form of George’s wife, a Maitland impostor (the butler’s brother) and finally the real George himself. Tons Of Money by Will Evans and Valentine is a classic farce – the first of the Aldwych farces – which Alan Ayckbourn chose to adapt for his company.
